The Queensland Government is facing criticism after announcing the construction of a $1.9 billion Central Queensland hydroelectric dam.
The decision was prompted by the need for a new dam after the devastating 2014 Burdekin River flood, which killed more than 200 people.
The Burdeksin dam is the second-largest dam in the state and the biggest hydroelectric project in the world.
However, the state’s Government has said the project will have “little to no” impact on water levels in the river.
The Queensland Power and Gas Corporation (QPGC) has confirmed the project has “been delayed indefinitely”, with construction to start in 2019.
What you need to know about the Burdock dam: Why is it important?
The dam will be the largest in the central Queensland region and will generate enough electricity to power more than 100,000 homes.
But critics say the project would not have much impact on the water table because the new dam will not contain water to store it.
“It’s going to have water stored there but it’s not going to be holding water,” said Queensland Environment Minister Nick Minchin.
“That’s the only thing that’s going away.”
Mr Minchin says the new project will not be affected by climate change, but critics say it is too big a risk to consider the risk.
The project will also create new jobs for the state.
The Government says the project was “the first major infrastructure project in Queensland’s history” and that it would have “no adverse environmental impacts”.
Mr Minchin says it is “too early to say” whether the project is a good idea or a bad one.
“I’m very confident in the project’s potential,” he said.
The new dam is expected to be completed by 2021, and the project currently has a budget of $1 billion.
What the experts say About the project: What’s being done now?
The project is being led by QPGC, with the company managing the dam and QPG CIO Steve Chilcott as the project manager.
The company says the dam will hold enough water to cover more than half of the Queensland River.
The reservoir will be a massive reservoir, which is also the size of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and will hold an estimated 250 million cubic metres of water.
But the new reservoir is likely to be about 20 times larger than the Biddock dam, and could be more than 10 times the size.
The biggest concern is that the reservoir is too small to accommodate the flow of the river, and that the existing dam could flood, causing a major dam failure.
The state’s Bureau of Meteorology says there are some problems with the project, but the most likely scenario is that there will be floodwater, which could be significant.
What’s the timeline?
Construction of the dam is due to start at the end of 2019.
“This is a project that will deliver more than the $1bn estimate, but we are expecting that to be revised down,” Mr Minichin said.
What does the new Burdok dam mean for the Bunnies?
The Biddocks dam is not a new project, and was approved in 2013, and is one of the biggest dams in the country.
The dam is estimated to hold an area equivalent to 1,000 football fields.
The construction of the new one will have an impact on about 400 people and the Biddy Dam will have a total of 1,200 homes and businesses.
But many residents and businesses in the region are already concerned about the dam, with some questioning the project.
The $1-billion cost of the project – $2.6 billion – was revealed in a document released to the media in April, when the Queensland Government announced that it had made the decision to build the dam.
Queensland’s Deputy Premier, Catherine McKenna, said the Government was trying to make sure the public had the information they needed before committing to a large project.
“The Queensland Government has made a commitment to Queenslanders, and Queenslanders are well aware that there is uncertainty around the project,” Ms McKenna said.
“However, we are determined to deliver the project that we have committed to deliver, and this decision has been made based on the information we have received and the public’s concerns.”
What is the Government saying?
Ms McKenna has also confirmed that the Government is “committed to ensuring that we get the job done”, but said that “some of the uncertainties have been mitigated”.
“This decision is the result of a long-term evaluation of the Bids Dam project,” she said.
Ms McKenna says the Government has been looking at a number of options, including a number “that may be viable to consider”, but has not made a final decision.
“Our priority is to ensure that the job is done in a way that is both safe and environmentally responsible,” she added.
“We are also committed to continuing to monitor the
