A man in northern California has been arrested for allegedly burning the body of his elderly grandmother, after police said the 82-year-old had died from COVID-19.

The man, who was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder and arson, was identified by police as Daniel Lee Smith, of Sacramento, according to a news release from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Police said the grandmother died on Sunday after suffering cardiac arrest, as her family prepared to move to an assisted living facility.

The cause of death was not immediately released, but Smith was arrested in connection with the death, the release said.

According to police, the grandmother was in her 60s when she died.

The sheriff’s department said she had asthma, depression and a history of asthma.

A memorial service for the grandmother is scheduled for Tuesday at the Orange County Register office, and a fund has been established in Smith’s name.
